The First Book of Moses, called Genesis

Chapter 28

1

And Isaac called4 Jacob, and blessed17 him, and charged17 him, and said4 unto him, Thou shalt not take4 a wife of the daughters of Canaan.

2

Arise,3 go3 to Padanaram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother's father; and take3 thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban thy mother's brother.

3

And God Almighty bless17 thee, and make thee fruitful,55 and multiply55 thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people;

4

And give4 thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit2 the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave1 unto Abraham.

5

And Isaac sent away4 Jacob: and he went4 to Padanaram unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob's and Esau's mother.

6

When Esau saw4 that Isaac had blessed14 Jacob, and sent him away14 to Padanaram, to take2 him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed15 him he gave him a charge,17 saying,2 Thou shalt not take4 a wife of the daughters of Canaan;

7

And that Jacob obeyed4 his father and his mother, and was gone4 to Padanaram;

8

And Esau seeing4 that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father;

9

Then went4 Esau unto Ishmael, and took4 unto the wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham's son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.

10

And Jacob went out4 from Beersheba, and went4 toward Haran.

11

And he lighted4 upon a certain place, and tarried there all night,4 because the sun was set;1 and he took4 of the stones of that place, and put4 [them for] his pillows, and lay down4 in that place to sleep.

12

And he dreamed,4 and behold a ladder set up94 on the earth, and the top of it reached56 to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending6 and descending6 on it.

13

And, behold, the LORD stood12 above it, and said,4 I [am] the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest,6 to thee will I give4 it, and to thy seed;

14

And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad1 to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.8

15

And, behold, I [am] with thee, and will keep1 thee in all [places] whither thou goest,4 and will bring thee again52 into this land; for I will not leave4 thee, until I have done1 [that] which I have spoken14 to thee of.

16

And Jacob awaked4 out of his sleep, and he said,4 Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew1 [it] not.

17

And he was afraid,4 and said,4 How dreadful12 [is] this place! this [is] none other but the house of God, and this [is] the gate of heaven.

18

And Jacob rose up early55 in the morning, and took4 the stone that he had put1 [for] his pillows, and set it up4 [for] a pillar, and poured4 oil upon the top of it.

19

And he called4 the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city [was called] Luz at the first.

20

And Jacob vowed4 a vow, saying,2 If God will be with me, and will keep1 me in this way that I go,6 and will give1 me bread to eat,2 and raiment to put on,2

21

So that I come again1 to my father's house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God:

22

And this stone, which I have set1 [for] a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give4 me I will surely15 give the tenth17 unto thee.
