The First Book of Moses, called Genesis

Chapter 33

1

And Jacob lifted up4 his eyes, and looked,4 and, behold, Esau came,6 and with him four hundred men. And he divided4 the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids.

2

And he put4 the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost.

3

And he passed over1 before them, and bowed101 himself to the ground seven times, until he came near2 to his brother.

4

And Esau ran4 to meet2 him, and embraced17 him, and fell4 on his neck, and kissed4 him: and they wept.4

5

And he lifted up4 his eyes, and saw4 the women and the children; and said,4 Who [are] those with thee? And he said,4 The children which God hath graciously given1 thy servant.

6

Then the handmaidens came near,4 they and their children, and they bowed101 themselves.

7

And Leah also with her children came near,4 and bowed101 themselves: and after came Joseph near8 and Rachel, and they bowed101 themselves.

8

And he said,4 What [meanest] thou by all this drove which I met?1 And he said,4 [These are] to find2 grace in the sight of my lord.

9

And Esau said,4 I have enough, my brother; keep that thou hast unto thyself.

10

And Jacob said,4 Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found1 grace in thy sight, then receive1 my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen1 thy face, as though I had seen2 the face of God, and thou wast pleased4 with me.

11

Take,3 I pray thee, my blessing that is brought90 to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me,1 and because I have enough. And he urged4 him, and he took4 [it].

12

And he said,4 Let us take our journey,4 and let us go,4 and I will go4 before thee.

13

And he said4 unto him, My lord knoweth6 that the children [are] tender, and the flocks and herds with young6 [are] with me: and if men should overdrive1 them one day, all the flock will die.1

14

Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over4 before his servant: and I will lead on101 softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure, until I come4 unto my lord unto Seir.

15

And Esau said,4 Let me now leave55 with thee [some] of the folk that [are] with me. And he said,4 What needeth it? let me find4 grace in the sight of my lord.

16

So Esau returned4 that day on his way unto Seir.

17

And Jacob journeyed1 to Succoth, and built4 him an house, and made1 booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called1 Succoth.

18

And Jacob came4 to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which [is] in the land of Canaan, when he came2 from Padanaram; and pitched his tent4 before the city.

19

And he bought4 a parcel of a field, where he had spread1 his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for an hundred pieces of money.

20

And he erected55 there an altar, and called4 it Elelohe-Israel.
