The Second Book of Moses, Called Exodus

Chapter 16

1

And they took their journey4 from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came4 unto the wilderness of Sin, which [is] between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth 6240 day of the second month after their departing2 out of the land of Egypt.

2

And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured11 against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness:

3

And the children of Israel said4 unto them, Would to God 5414 4 we had died2 by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat2 by the flesh pots, [and] when we did eat2 bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth52 into this wilderness, to kill53 this whole assembly with hunger.

4

Then said4 the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain56 bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out1 and gather1 a certain rate every day, 3117 that I may prove17 them, whether they will walk4 in my law, or no.

5

And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare52 [that] which they bring in;55 and it shall be twice as much as they gather4 daily. 3117

6

And Moses and Aaron said4 unto all the children of Israel, At even, then ye shall know1 that the LORD hath brought you out52 from the land of Egypt:

7

And in the morning, then ye shall see1 the glory of the LORD; for that he heareth2 your murmurings against the LORD: and what [are] we, that ye murmur55 3885 11 against us?

8

And Moses said,4 [This shall be], when the LORD shall give2 you in the evening flesh to eat,2 and in the morning bread to the full;2 for that the LORD heareth2 your murmurings which ye murmur56 against him: and what [are] we? your murmurings [are] not against us, but against the LORD.

9

And Moses spake4 unto Aaron, Say3 unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, Come near3 before the LORD: for he hath heard1 your murmurings.

10

And it came to pass, as Aaron spake15 unto the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked4 toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of the LORD appeared8 in the cloud.

11

And the LORD spake17 unto Moses, saying,2

12

I have heard1 the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak16 unto them, saying,2 At even ye shall eat4 flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled4 with bread; and ye shall know1 that I [am] the LORD your God.

13

And it came to pass, that at even the quails came up,4 and covered17 the camp: and in the morning the dew lay round about the host.

14

And when the dew that lay was gone up,4 behold, upon the face of the wilderness [there lay] a small round thing,30 [as] small as the hoar frost on the ground.

15

And when the children of Israel saw4 [it], they said4 one to another, It [is] manna: for they wist1 not what it [was]. And Moses said4 unto them, This [is] the bread which the LORD hath given1 you to eat.

16

This [is] the thing which the LORD hath commanded,14 Gather3 of it every man according to his eating, an omer for every man, [according to] the number of your persons; take4 ye every man for [them] which [are] in his tents.

17

And the children of Israel did4 so, and gathered,4 some more,56 some less.56

18

And when they did mete4 [it] with an omer, he that gathered much56 had nothing over,52 and he that gathered little56 had no lack;52 they gathered1 every man according to his eating.

19

And Moses said,4 Let no man leave55 of it till the morning.

20

Notwithstanding they hearkened1 not unto Moses; but some of them left55 of it until the morning, and it bred4 worms, and stank:4 and Moses was wroth4 with them.

21

And they gathered4 it every morning, 1242 every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot,1 it melted.8

22

And it came to pass, [that] on the sixth day they gathered1 twice as much bread, two omers for one [man]: and all the rulers of the congregation came4 and told55 Moses.

23

And he said4 unto them, This [is that] which the LORD hath said,14 To morrow [is] the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake3 [that] which ye will bake4 [to day], and seethe16 that ye will seethe;17 and that which remaineth6 over lay up54 for you to be kept until the morning.

24

And they laid it up55 till the morning, as Moses bade:14 and it did not stink,52 neither was there any worm therein.

25

And Moses said,4 Eat3 that to day; for to day [is] a sabbath unto the LORD: to day ye shall not find4 it in the field.

26

Six days ye shall gather4 it; but on the seventh day, [which is] the sabbath, in it there shall be none.

27

And it came to pass, [that] there went out1 [some] of the people on the seventh day for to gather,2 and they found1 none.

28

And the LORD said4 unto Moses, How long refuse14 ye to keep2 my commandments and my laws?

29

See,3 for that the LORD hath given1 you the sabbath, therefore he giveth6 you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide3 ye every man in his place, let no man go out4 of his place on the seventh day.

30

So the people rested4 on the seventh day.

31

And the house of Israel called4 the name thereof Manna: and it [was] like coriander seed, white; and the taste of it [was] like wafers [made] with honey.

32

And Moses said,4 This [is] the thing which the LORD commandeth,14 Fill an omer of it to be kept for your generations; that they may see4 the bread wherewith I have fed52 you in the wilderness, when I brought you forth53 from the land of Egypt.

33

And Moses said4 unto Aaron, Take3 a pot, and put3 an omer full of manna therein, and lay it up54 before the LORD, to be kept for your generations.

34

As the LORD commanded14 Moses, so Aaron laid it up55 before the Testimony, to be kept.

35

And the children of Israel did eat1 manna forty years, until they came2 to a land inhabited;12 they did eat1 manna, until they came2 unto the borders of the land of Canaan.

36

Now an omer [is] the tenth [part] of an ephah.
