The Second Book of Moses, Called Exodus

Chapter 19

1

In the third month, when the children of Israel were gone forth2 out of the land of Egypt, the same day came1 they [into] the wilderness of Sinai.

2

For they were departed4 from Rephidim, and were come4 [to] the desert of Sinai, and had pitched4 in the wilderness; and there Israel camped4 before the mount.

3

And Moses went up1 unto God, and the LORD called4 unto him out of the mountain, saying,2 Thus shalt thou say4 to the house of Jacob, and tell55 the children of Israel;

4

Ye have seen1 what I did1 unto the Egyptians, and [how] I bare4 you on eagles' wings, and brought55 you unto myself.

5

Now therefore, if ye will obey4 my voice indeed,2 and keep1 my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth [is] mine:

6

And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These [are] the words which thou shalt speak17 unto the children of Israel.

7

And Moses came4 and called4 for the elders of the people, and laid4 before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded14 him.

8

And all the people answered4 together, and said,4 All that the LORD hath spoken14 we will do.4 And Moses returned55 the words of the people unto the LORD.

9

And the LORD said4 unto Moses, Lo, I come6 unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear4 when I speak15 with thee, and believe55 thee for ever. And Moses told55 the words of the people unto the LORD.

10

And the LORD said4 unto Moses, Go3 unto the people, and sanctify14 them to day and to morrow, and let them wash14 their clothes,

11

And be ready12 against the third day: for the third day the LORD will come down4 in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai.

12

And thou shalt set bounds52 unto the people round about, saying,2 Take heed10 to yourselves, [that ye] go [not] up2 into the mount, or touch2 the border of it: whosoever toucheth6 the mount shall be surely2 put to death:93

13

There shall not an hand touch4 it, but he shall surely2 be stoned,11 or shot11 through;2 whether [it be] beast or man, it shall not live:4 when the trumpet soundeth long,2 they shall come up4 to the mount.

14

And Moses went down4 from the mount unto the people, and sanctified17 the people; and they washed17 their clothes.

15

And he said4 unto the people, Be3 ready12 against the third day: come4 not at [your] wives.

16

And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that [was] in the camp trembled.4

17

And Moses brought forth55 the people out of the camp to meet2 with God; and they stood101 at the nether part of the mount.

18

And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke,1 because 834 the LORD descended1 upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended4 as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked4 greatly.

19

And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long,6 and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake,17 and God answered4 him by a voice.

20

And the LORD came down4 upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called4 Moses [up] to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.4

21

And the LORD said4 unto Moses, Go down,3 charge54 the people, lest they break through4 unto the LORD to gaze,2 and many of them perish.1

22

And let the priests also, which come near12 to the LORD, sanctify101 themselves, lest the LORD break forth4 upon them.

23

And Moses said4 unto the LORD, The people cannot 3201 4 come up2 to mount Sinai: for thou chargedst52 us, saying,2 Set bounds54 about the mount, and sanctify14 it.

24

And the LORD said4 unto him, Away,3 get thee down,3 and thou shalt come up,1 thou, and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through4 to come up2 unto the LORD, lest he break forth4 upon them.

25

So Moses went down4 unto the people, and spake4 unto them.
