The Second Book of Moses, Called Exodus

Chapter 23

1

Thou shalt not raise4 a false report: put4 not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.

2

Thou shalt not follow a multitude to [do] evil; neither shalt thou speak4 in a cause to decline2 after many to wrest53 [judgment]:

3

Neither shalt thou countenance4 a poor man in his cause.

4

If thou meet4 thine enemy's6 ox or his ass going astray,6 thou shalt surely53 bring it back55 to him again.

5

If thou see4 the ass of him that hateth6 thee lying6 under his burden, and wouldest forbear1 to help2 him, thou shalt surely2 help4 with him.

6

Thou shalt not wrest55 the judgment of thy poor in his cause.

7

Keep thee far4 from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay4 thou not: for I will not justify55 the wicked.

8

And thou shalt take4 no gift: for the gift blindeth17 the wise, and perverteth17 the words of the righteous.

9

Also thou shalt not oppress4 a stranger: for ye know1 the heart of a stranger, seeing ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.

10

And six years thou shalt sow4 thy land, and shalt gather1 in the fruits thereof:

11

But the seventh [year] thou shalt let it rest4 and lie still;1 that the poor of thy people may eat:1 and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat.4 In like manner thou shalt deal4 with thy vineyard, [and] with thy oliveyard.

12

Six days thou shalt do4 thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest:4 that thine ox and thine ass may rest,4 and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed.11

13

And in all [things] that I have said1 unto you be circumspect:11 and make no mention55 of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard11 out of thy mouth.

14

Three times thou shalt keep a feast4 unto me in the year.

15

Thou shalt keep4 the feast of unleavened bread: (thou shalt eat4 unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded14 thee, in the time appointed of the month Abib; for in it thou camest out1 from Egypt: and none shall appear11 before me empty:)

16

And the feast of harvest, the firstfruits of thy labours, which thou hast sown4 in the field: and the feast of ingathering, [which is] in the end2 of the year, when thou hast gathered2 in thy labours out of the field.

17

Three times in the year all thy males shall appear11 before the Lord GOD.

18

Thou shalt not offer4 the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the fat of my sacrifice remain4 until the morning.

19

The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring55 into the house of the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe17 a kid in his mother's milk.

20

Behold, I send6 an Angel before thee, to keep2 thee in the way, and to bring53 thee into the place which I have prepared.52

21

Beware10 of him, and obey3 his voice, provoke55 him not; for he will not pardon4 your transgressions: for my name [is] in him.

22

But if thou shalt indeed2 obey4 his voice, and do1 all that I speak;17 then I will be an enemy1 unto thine enemies,6 and an adversary1 unto thine adversaries.6

23

For mine Angel shall go4 before thee, and bring52 thee in unto the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites: and I will cut them off.52

24

Thou shalt not bow down101 to their gods, nor serve93 them, nor do4 after their works: but thou shalt utterly15 overthrow17 them, and quite15 break down17 their images.

25

And ye shall serve1 the LORD your God, and he shall bless14 thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away52 from the midst of thee.

26

There shall nothing cast their young,18 nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfil.17

27

I will send17 my fear before thee, and will destroy1 all the people to whom thou shalt come,4 and I will make1 all thine enemies6 turn their backs unto thee.

28

And I will send1 hornets before thee, which shall drive out14 the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee.

29

I will not drive them out17 from before thee in one year; lest the land become desolate, and the beast of the field multiply against thee.

30

By little and little I will drive them out17 from before thee, until thou be increased,4 and inherit1 the land.

31

And I will set1 thy bounds from the Red sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river: for I will deliver4 the inhabitants6 of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out14 before thee.

32

Thou shalt make4 no covenant with them, nor with their gods.

33

They shall not dwell4 in thy land, lest they make thee sin55 against me: for if thou serve4 their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee.
