The Second Book of Moses, Called Exodus

Chapter 32

1

And when the people saw4 that Moses delayed14 to come down2 out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together11 unto Aaron, and said4 unto him, Up,3 make3 us gods, which shall go4 before us; for [as for] this Moses, the man that brought us up52 out of the land of Egypt, we wot1 not what is become of him.

2

And Aaron said4 unto them, Break off16 the golden earrings, which [are] in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring54 [them] unto me.

3

And all the people brake off101 the golden earrings which [were] in their ears, and brought55 [them] unto Aaron.

4

And he received4 [them] at their hand, and fashioned4 it with a graving tool, after he had made4 it a molten calf: and they said,4 These [be] thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up52 out of the land of Egypt.

5

And when Aaron saw4 [it], he built4 an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation,4 and said,4 To morrow [is] a feast to the LORD.

6

And they rose up early55 on the morrow, and offered55 burnt offerings, and brought55 peace offerings; and the people sat down4 to eat2 and to drink,2 and rose up4 to play.15

7

And the LORD said17 unto Moses, Go,3 get thee down;3 for thy people, which thou broughtest52 out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted14 [themselves]:

8

They have turned aside1 quickly out of the way which I commanded14 them: they have made1 them a molten calf, and have worshipped101 it, and have sacrificed4 thereunto, and said,4 These [be] thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up52 out of the land of Egypt.

9

And the LORD said4 unto Moses, I have seen1 this people, and, behold, it [is] a stiffnecked 6203 people:

10

Now therefore let me alone,54 that my wrath may wax hot4 against them, and that I may consume17 them: and I will make4 of thee a great nation.

11

And Moses besought17 6440 the LORD his God, and said,4 LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot4 against thy people, which thou hast brought forth52 out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?

12

Wherefore should the Egyptians speak,4 and say,2 For mischief did he bring them out,52 to slay2 them in the mountains, and to consume15 them from the face of the earth? Turn3 from thy fierce wrath, and repent10 of this evil against thy people.

13

Remember3 Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest8 by thine own self, and saidst17 unto them, I will multiply55 your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken1 of will I give4 unto your seed, and they shall inherit1 [it] for ever.

14

And the LORD repented11 of the evil which he thought14 to do2 unto his people.

15

And Moses turned,4 and went down4 from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony [were] in his hand: the tables [were] written7 on both their sides; on the one side and on the other [were] they written.7

16

And the tables [were] the work of God, and the writing [was] the writing of God, graven7 upon the tables.

17

And when Joshua heard4 the noise of the people as they shouted, he said4 unto Moses, [There is] a noise of war in the camp.

18

And he said,4 [It is] not the voice of [them that] shout2 for mastery, neither [is it] the voice of [them that] cry2 for being overcome: [but] the noise of [them that] sing15 do I hear.6

19

And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh1 unto the camp, that he saw4 the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot,4 and he cast55 the tables out of his hands, and brake17 them beneath the mount.

20

And he took4 the calf which they had made,1 and burnt4 [it] in the fire, and ground4 [it] to powder,1 and strawed4 [it] upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink55 [of it].

21

And Moses said4 unto Aaron, What did1 this people unto thee, that thou hast brought52 so great a sin upon them?

22

And Aaron said,4 Let not the anger of my lord wax hot:4 thou knowest1 the people, that they [are set] on mischief.

23

For they said4 unto me, Make3 us gods, which shall go4 before us: for [as for] this Moses, the man that brought us up52 out of the land of Egypt, we wot1 not what is become of him.

24

And I said4 unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break [it] off.100 So they gave4 [it] me: then I cast55 it into the fire, and there came out4 this calf.

25

And when Moses saw4 that the people [were] naked;7 (for Aaron had made them naked1 unto [their] shame among their enemies:)5

26

Then Moses stood4 in the gate of the camp, and said,4 Who [is] on the LORD'S side? [let him come] unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered11 themselves together unto him.

27

And he said4 unto them, Thus saith1 the LORD God of Israel, Put3 every man his sword by his side, [and] go3 in and out3 from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay3 every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.

28

And the children of Levi did4 according to the word of Moses: and there fell4 of the people that day about three thousand men.

29

For Moses had said,4 Consecrate yourselves3 to day to the LORD, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow2 upon you a blessing this day.

30

And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said4 unto the people, Ye have sinned1 a great sin: and now I will go up4 unto the LORD; peradventure I shall make an atonement17 for your sin.

31

And Moses returned4 unto the LORD, and said,4 Oh, this people have sinned1 a great sin, and have made4 them gods of gold.

32

Yet now, if thou wilt forgive4 their sin--; and if not, blot3 me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.1

33

And the LORD said4 unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned1 against me, him will I blot out4 of my book.

34

Therefore now go,3 lead3 the people unto [the place] of which I have spoken14 unto thee: behold, mine Angel shall go4 before thee: nevertheless in the day when I visit2 I will visit1 their sin upon them.

35

And the LORD plagued4 the people, because they made1 the calf, which Aaron made.1
