The Fourth Book of Moses, called Numbers

Chapter 5

1

And the LORD spake17 unto Moses, saying,2

2

Command16 the children of Israel, that they put out17 of the camp every leper,7 and every one that hath an issue,6 and whosoever is defiled by the dead:

3

Both male and female shall ye put out,17 without the camp shall ye put17 them; that they defile17 not their camps, in the midst whereof I dwell.6

4

And the children of Israel did4 so, and put them out17 without the camp: as the LORD spake14 unto Moses, so did1 the children of Israel.

5

And the LORD spake17 unto Moses, saying,2

6

Speak16 unto the children of Israel, When a man or woman shall commit4 any sin that men commit, to do2 a trespass against the LORD, and that person be guilty;1

7

Then they shall confess98 their sin which they have done:1 and he shall recompense52 his trespass with the principal thereof, and add55 unto it the fifth [part] thereof, and give1 [it] unto [him] against whom he hath trespassed.1

8

But if the man have no kinsman6 to recompense53 the trespass unto, let the trespass be recompensed94 unto the LORD, [even] to the priest; beside the ram of the atonement, whereby an atonement17 shall be made for him.

9

And every offering of all the holy things of the children of Israel, which they bring55 unto the priest, shall be his.

10

And every man's hallowed things shall be his: whatsoever any man giveth4 the priest, it shall be his.

11

And the LORD spake17 unto Moses, saying,2

12

Speak16 unto the children of Israel, and say1 unto them, If any man's wife go aside,4 and commit1 a trespass against him,

13

And a man lie1 with her carnally, 2233 and it be hid8 from the eyes of her husband, and be kept close,8 and she be defiled,8 and [there be] no witness against her, neither she be taken8 [with the manner];

14

And the spirit of jealousy come1 upon him, and he be jealous14 of his wife, and she be defiled:8 or if the spirit of jealousy come1 upon him, and he be jealous14 of his wife, and she be not defiled:8

15

Then shall the man bring52 his wife unto the priest, and he shall bring52 her offering for her, the tenth [part] of an ephah of barley meal; he shall pour4 no oil upon it, nor put4 frankincense thereon; for it [is] an offering of jealousy, an offering of memorial, bringing iniquity to remembrance.56

16

And the priest shall bring her near,52 and set52 her before the LORD:

17

And the priest shall take1 holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is in the floor of the tabernacle the priest shall take,4 and put1 [it] into the water:

18

And the priest shall set52 the woman before the LORD, and uncover1 the woman's head, and put1 the offering of memorial in her hands, which [is] the jealousy offering: and the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that causeth the curse:18

19

And the priest shall charge her by an oath,52 and say1 unto the woman, If no man have lain1 with thee, and if thou hast not gone aside1 to uncleanness [with another] instead of thy husband, be thou free10 from this bitter water that causeth the curse:18

20

But if thou hast gone aside1 [to another] instead of thy husband, and if thou be defiled,8 and some man have4 lain with thee beside thine husband:

21

Then the priest shall charge52 the woman with an oath of cursing, and the priest shall say1 unto the woman, The LORD make4 thee a curse and an oath among thy people, when the LORD doth make2 thy thigh to rot,6 and thy belly to swell;

22

And this water that causeth the curse18 shall go1 into thy bowels, to make [thy] belly to swell,53 and [thy] thigh to rot:53 And the woman shall say,1 Amen, amen.

23

And the priest shall write1 these curses in a book, and he shall blot [them] out1 with the bitter water:

24

And he shall cause the woman to drink52 the bitter water that causeth the curse:18 and the water that causeth the curse18 shall enter1 into her, [and become] bitter.

25

Then the priest shall take1 the jealousy offering out of the woman's hand, and shall wave52 the offering before the LORD, and offer52 it upon the altar:

26

And the priest shall take an handful1 of the offering, [even] the memorial thereof, and burn52 [it] upon the altar, and afterward shall cause the woman to drink55 the water.

27

And when he hath made her to drink52 the water, then it shall come to pass, [that], if she be defiled,8 and have done4 trespass against her husband, that the water that causeth the curse18 shall enter1 into her, [and become] bitter, and her belly shall swell,1 and her thigh shall rot:1 and the woman shall be a curse among her people.

28

And if the woman be not defiled,8 but be clean; then she shall be free,8 and shall conceive8 seed.

29

This [is] the law of jealousies, when a wife goeth aside4 [to another] instead of her husband, and is defiled;8

30

Or when the spirit of jealousy cometh4 upon him, and he be jealous14 over his wife, and shall set52 the woman before the LORD, and the priest shall execute1 upon her all this law.

31

Then shall the man be guiltless8 from iniquity, and this woman shall bear4 her iniquity.
