The Fifth Book of Moses, called Deuteronomy

Chapter 8

1

All the commandments which I command18 thee this day shall ye observe4 to do,2 that ye may live,4 and multiply,1 and go in1 and possess1 the land which the LORD sware8 unto your fathers.

2

And thou shalt remember1 all the way which the LORD thy God led52 thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble15 thee, [and] to prove15 thee, to know2 what [was] in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep4 his commandments, or no.

3

And he humbled17 thee, and suffered thee to hunger,55 and fed55 thee with manna, which thou knewest1 not, neither did thy fathers know;1 that he might make thee know53 that man doth not live4 by bread only, but by every [word] that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.4

4

Thy raiment waxed not old1 upon thee, neither did thy foot swell,1 these forty years.

5

Thou shalt also consider1 in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth17 his son, [so] the LORD thy God chasteneth18 thee.

6

Therefore thou shalt keep1 the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk2 in his ways, and to fear2 him.

7

For the LORD thy God bringeth56 thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out6 of valleys and hills;

8

A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey;

9

A land wherein thou shalt eat4 bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack4 any [thing] in it; a land whose stones [are] iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig4 brass.

10

When thou hast eaten1 and art full,1 then thou shalt bless14 the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given1 thee.

11

Beware10 that thou forget4 not the LORD thy God, in not keeping2 his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command18 thee this day:

12

Lest [when] thou hast eaten4 and art full,1 and hast built4 goodly houses, and dwelt1 [therein];

13

And [when] thy herds and thy flocks multiply,4 and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied,4 and all that thou hast is multiplied;4

14

Then thine heart be lifted up,1 and thou forget1 the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth56 out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;

15

Who led56 thee through that great and terrible12 wilderness, [wherein were] fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where [there was] no water; who brought thee forth56 water out of the rock of flint;

16

Who fed56 thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew1 not, that he might humble15 thee, and that he might prove15 thee, to do thee good53 at thy latter end;

17

And thou say1 in thine heart, My power and the might of [mine] hand hath gotten1 me this wealth.

18

But thou shalt remember1 the LORD thy God: for [it is] he that giveth6 thee power to get2 wealth, that he may establish53 his covenant which he sware8 unto thy fathers, as [it is] this day.

19

And it shall be, if thou do at all2 forget4 the LORD thy God, and walk1 after other gods, and serve1 them, and worship98 them, I testify52 against you this day that ye shall surely2 perish.4

20

As the nations which the LORD destroyeth56 before your face, so shall ye perish;4 because ye would not be obedient4 unto the voice of the LORD your God.
