The Fifth Book of Moses, called Deuteronomy

Chapter 22

1

Thou shalt not see4 thy brother's ox or his sheep go astray,12 and hide98 thyself from them: thou shalt in any case53 bring them again55 unto thy brother.

2

And if thy brother [be] not nigh unto thee, or if thou know1 him not, then thou shalt bring1 it unto thine own house, and it shall be with thee until thy brother seek2 after it, and thou shalt restore52 it to him again.

3

In like manner shalt thou do4 with his ass; and so shalt thou do4 with his raiment; and with all lost thing of thy brother's, which he hath lost,4 and thou hast found,1 shalt thou do4 likewise: thou mayest4 not hide99 thyself.

4

Thou shalt not see4 thy brother's ass or his ox fall down6 by the way, and hide98 thyself from them: thou shalt surely53 help him to lift [them] up again.55

5

The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on4 a woman's garment: for all that do6 so [are] abomination unto the LORD thy God.

6

If a bird's nest chance11 to be before thee in the way in any tree, or on the ground, [whether they be] young ones, or eggs, and the dam sitting6 upon the young, or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take4 the dam with the young:

7

[But] thou shalt in any wise15 let the dam go,17 and take4 the young to thee; that it may be well4 with thee, and [that] thou mayest prolong52 [thy] days.

8

When thou buildest4 a new house, then thou shalt make1 a battlement for thy roof, that thou bring4 not blood upon thine house, if any man6 fall4 from thence.

9

Thou shalt not sow4 thy vineyard with divers seeds: lest the fruit of thy seed which thou hast sown,4 and the fruit of thy vineyard, be defiled.4

10

Thou shalt not plow4 with an ox and an ass together.

11

Thou shalt not wear4 a garment of divers sorts, [as] of woollen and linen together.

12

Thou shalt make4 thee fringes upon the four quarters of thy vesture, wherewith thou coverest17 [thyself].

13

If any man take4 a wife, and go in1 unto her, and hate1 her,

14

And give1 occasions of speech against her, and bring up52 an evil name upon her, and say,1 I took1 this woman, and when I came4 to her, I found1 her not a maid:

15

Then shall the father of the damsel, and her mother, take1 and bring forth52 [the tokens of] the damsel's virginity unto the elders of the city in the gate:

16

And the damsel's father shall say1 unto the elders, I gave1 my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hateth4 her;

17

And, lo, he hath given1 occasions of speech [against her], saying,2 I found1 not thy daughter a maid; and yet these [are the tokens of] my daughter's virginity. And they shall spread1 the cloth before the elders of the city.

18

And the elders of that city shall take1 that man and chastise14 him;

19

And they shall amerce1 him in an hundred [shekels] of silver, and give1 [them] unto the father of the damsel, because he hath brought up52 an evil name upon a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may4 not put her away15 all his days.

20

But if this thing be true, [and the tokens of] virginity be not found8 for the damsel:

21

Then they shall bring out52 the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone1 her with stones that she die:1 because she hath wrought1 folly in Israel, to play the whore2 in her father's house: so shalt thou put evil away14 from among you.

22

If a man be found11 lying6 with a woman married7 to an husband, then they shall both of them die,1 [both] the man that lay6 with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away14 evil from Israel.

23

If a damsel [that is] a virgin be betrothed30 unto an husband, and a man find1 her in the city, and lie1 with her;

24

Then ye shall bring them both out52 unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone1 them with stones that they die;1 the damsel, because 1697 she cried1 not, [being] in the city; and the man, because 1697 he hath humbled14 his neighbour's wife: so thou shalt put away14 evil from among you.

25

But if a man find4 a betrothed30 damsel in the field, and the man force52 her, and lie1 with her: then the man only that lay1 with her shall die:1

26

But unto the damsel thou shalt do4 nothing; [there is] in the damsel no sin [worthy] of death: for as when a man riseth4 against his neighbour, and slayeth1 him, even so [is] this matter:

27

For he found1 her in the field, [and] the betrothed30 damsel cried,1 and [there was] none to save56 her.

28

If a man find4 a damsel [that is] a virgin, which is not betrothed,27 and lay hold1 on her, and lie1 with her, and they be found;8

29

Then the man that lay6 with her shall give1 unto the damsel's father fifty [shekels] of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled14 her, he may4 not put her away15 all his days.

30

A man shall not take4 his father's wife, nor discover17 his father's skirt.
