The Fifth Book of Moses, called Deuteronomy

Chapter 25

1

If there be a controversy between men, and they come8 unto judgment, that [the judges] may judge1 them; then they shall justify52 the righteous, and condemn52 the wicked.

2

And it shall be, if the wicked man [be] worthy to be beaten,53 that the judge6 shall cause him to lie down,52 and to be beaten52 before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number.

3

Forty stripes55 he may give him, [and] not exceed:55 lest, [if] he should exceed,55 and beat53 him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem vile8 unto thee.

4

Thou shalt not muzzle4 the ox when he treadeth out2 [the corn].

5

If brethren dwell4 together, and one of them die,1 and have no child, the wife of the dead5 shall not marry without unto a stranger: 2114 5 her husband's brother shall go in4 unto her, and take1 her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband's brother17 unto her.

6

And it shall be, [that] the firstborn which she beareth4 shall succeed4 in the name of his brother [which is] dead,5 that his name be not put out11 of Israel.

7

And if the man like4 not to take2 his brother's wife, then let his brother's wife go up1 to the gate unto the elders, and say,1 My husband's brother refuseth14 to raise up53 unto his brother a name in Israel, he will1 not perform the duty of my husband's brother.15

8

Then the elders of his city shall call1 him, and speak14 unto him: and [if] he stand1 [to it], and say,1 I like1 not to take2 her;

9

Then shall his brother's wife come8 unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose1 his shoe from off his foot, and spit1 in his face, and shall answer1 and say,1 So shall it be done11 unto that man that will not build up4 his brother's house.

10

And his name shall be called8 in Israel, The house of him that hath his shoe loosed.7

11

When men strive11 together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth near1 for to deliver53 her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth56 him, and putteth forth1 her hand, and taketh52 him by the secrets:

12

Then thou shalt cut off1 her hand, thine eye shall not pity4 [her].

13

Thou shalt not have in thy bag divers weights, 68 a great and a small.

14

Thou shalt not have in thine house divers measures, 374 a great and a small.

15

[But] thou shalt have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have: that thy days may be lengthened55 in the land which the LORD thy God giveth6 thee.

16

For all that do6 such things, [and] all that do6 unrighteously, [are] an abomination unto the LORD thy God.

17

Remember2 what Amalek did1 unto thee by the way, when ye were come forth2 out of Egypt;

18

How he met1 thee by the way, and smote the hindmost17 of thee, [even] all [that were] feeble12 behind thee, when thou [wast] faint and weary; and he feared not God.

19

Therefore it shall be, when the LORD thy God hath given thee rest53 from all thine enemies6 round about, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth6 thee [for] an inheritance to possess2 it, [that] thou shalt blot out4 the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not forget4 [it].
