The Book of Joshua

Chapter 10

1

Now it came to pass, when Adonizedek king of Jerusalem had heard2 how Joshua had taken1 Ai, and had utterly destroyed55 it; as he had done1 to Jericho and her king, so he had done1 to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants6 of Gibeon had made peace52 with Israel, and were among them;

2

That they feared4 greatly, because Gibeon [was] a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it [was] greater than Ai, and all the men thereof [were] mighty.

3

Wherefore Adonizedek king of Jerusalem sent4 unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,2

4

Come up3 unto me, and help3 me, that we may smite55 Gibeon: for it hath made peace52 with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

5

Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered11 themselves together, and went up,4 they and all their hosts, and encamped4 before Gibeon, and made war11 against it.

6

And the men of Gibeon sent4 unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying,2 Slack55 not thy hand from thy servants; come up3 to us quickly, and save54 us, and help3 us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell6 in the mountains are gathered together8 against us.

7

So Joshua ascended4 from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.

8

And the LORD said4 unto Joshua, Fear4 them not: for I have delivered1 them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand4 before thee.

9

Joshua therefore came4 unto them suddenly, [and] went up1 from Gilgal all night.

10

And the LORD discomfited4 them before Israel, and slew55 them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased4 them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote55 them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

11

And it came to pass, as they fled2 from before Israel, [and] were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD cast down52 great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died:4 [they were] more which died1 with hailstones 68 than [they] whom the children of Israel slew1 with the sword.

12

Then spake17 Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up2 the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said4 in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still3 upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

13

And the sun stood still,4 and the moon stayed,1 until the people had avenged4 themselves upon their enemies.6 [Is] not this written7 in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still4 in the midst of heaven, and hasted1 not to go down2 about a whole day.

14

And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened2 unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought12 for Israel.

15

And Joshua returned,4 and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

16

But these five kings fled,4 and hid11 themselves in a cave at Makkedah.

17

And it was told93 Joshua, saying,2 The five kings are found8 hid12 in a cave at Makkedah.

18

And Joshua said,4 Roll3 great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set54 men by it for to keep2 them:

19

And stay4 ye not, [but] pursue3 after your enemies,6 and smite the hindmost14 of them; suffer4 them not to enter2 into their cities: for the LORD your God hath delivered1 them into your hand.

20

And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end15 of slaying53 them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed,2 that the rest [which] remained1 of them entered4 into fenced cities.

21

And all the people returned4 to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved1 his tongue against any of the children of Israel.

22

Then said4 Joshua, Open3 the mouth of the cave, and bring out54 those five kings unto me out of the cave.

23

And they did4 so, and brought forth55 those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, [and] the king of Eglon.

24

And it came to pass, when they brought out53 those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called4 for all the men of Israel, and said4 unto the captains of the men of war which went1 with him, Come near,3 put3 your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near,4 and put4 their feet upon the necks of them.

25

And Joshua said4 unto them, Fear4 not, nor be dismayed,11 be strong3 and of good courage:3 for thus shall the LORD do4 to all your enemies6 against whom ye fight.12

26

And afterward Joshua smote55 them, and slew55 them, and hanged4 them on five trees: and they were hanging7 upon the trees until the evening.

27

And it came to pass at the time of the going down2 of the sun, [that] Joshua commanded,14 and they took them down55 off the trees, and cast55 them into the cave wherein they had been hid,8 and laid4 great stones in the cave's mouth, [which remain] until this very day.

28

And that day Joshua took1 Makkedah, and smote55 it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed,52 them, and all the souls that [were] therein; he let52 none remain: and he did4 to the king of Makkedah as he did1 unto the king of Jericho.

29

Then Joshua passed4 from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought11 against Libnah:

30

And the LORD delivered4 it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote55 it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that [were] therein; he let52 none remain in it; but did4 unto the king thereof as he did1 unto the king of Jericho.

31

And Joshua passed4 from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped4 against it, and fought11 against it:

32

And the LORD delivered4 Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took4 it on the second day, and smote55 it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that [were] therein, according to all that he had done1 to Libnah.

33

Then Horam king of Gezer came up1 to help2 Lachish; and Joshua smote55 him and his people, until he had left52 him none remaining.

34

And from Lachish Joshua passed4 unto Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped4 against it, and fought11 against it:

35

And they took4 it on that day, and smote55 it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that [were] therein he utterly destroyed52 that day, according to all that he had done1 to Lachish.

36

And Joshua went up4 from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought11 against it:

37

And they took4 it, and smote55 it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that [were] therein; he left52 none remaining, according to all that he had done1 to Eglon; but destroyed it utterly,55 and all the souls that [were] therein.

38

And Joshua returned,4 and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought11 against it:

39

And he took4 it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote55 them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed55 all the souls that [were] therein; he left52 none remaining: as he had done1 to Hebron, so he did1 to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done1 also to Libnah, and to her king.

40

So Joshua smote55 all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left52 none remaining, but utterly destroyed52 all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded.14

41

And Joshua smote55 them from Kadeshbarnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon.

42

And all these kings and their land did Joshua take1 at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought12 for Israel.

43

And Joshua returned,4 and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.
