The Second Book of Samuel

Chapter 5

1

Then came4 all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake,4 saying,2 Behold, we [are] thy bone and thy flesh.

2

Also in time past, 8032 when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out56 and broughtest in56 Israel: and the LORD said4 to thee, Thou shalt feed4 my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel.

3

So all the elders of Israel came4 to the king to Hebron; and king David made4 a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed4 David king over Israel.

4

David [was] thirty years old when he began to reign,2 [and] he reigned1 forty years.

5

In Hebron he reigned1 over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned1 thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.

6

And the king and his men went4 to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants6 of the land: which spake4 unto David, saying,2 Except thou take away53 the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in4 hither: thinking,2 David cannot come in4 hither.

7

Nevertheless David took4 the strong hold of Zion: the same [is] the city of David.

8

And David said4 on that day, Whosoever getteth up4 to the gutter, and smiteth56 the Jebusites, and the lame and the blind, [that are] hated7 of David's soul, [he shall be chief and captain]. Wherefore they said,4 The blind and the lame shall not come4 into the house.

9

So David dwelt4 in the fort, and called4 it the city of David. And David built4 round about from Millo and inward.

10

And David went4 on,2 and grew great, and the LORD God of hosts [was] with him.

11

And Hiram king of Tyre sent4 messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters, 6086 and masons: 7023 68 and they built4 David an house.

12

And David perceived4 that the LORD had established52 him king over Israel, and that he had exalted14 his kingdom for his people Israel's sake.

13

And David took4 [him] more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come2 from Hebron: and there were yet sons and daughters born11 to David.

14

And these [be] the names of those that were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shammua, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon,

15

Ibhar also, and Elishua, and Nepheg, and Japhia,

16

And Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphalet.

17

But when the Philistines heard4 that they had anointed1 David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up4 to seek15 David; and David heard4 [of it], and went down4 to the hold.

18

The Philistines also came1 and spread11 themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

19

And David enquired4 of the LORD, saying,2 Shall I go up4 to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver4 them into mine hand? And the LORD said4 unto David, Go up:3 for I will doubtless2 deliver4 the Philistines into thine hand.

20

And David came4 to Baalperazim, and David smote55 them there, and said,4 The LORD hath broken forth1 upon mine enemies6 before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called1 the name of that place Baalperazim.

21

And there they left4 their images, and David and his men burned4 them.

22

And the Philistines came up2 yet again,55 and spread11 themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

23

And when David enquired4 of the LORD, he said,4 Thou shalt not go up;4 [but] fetch a compass54 behind them, and come1 upon them over against the mulberry trees.

24

And let it be, when thou hearest2 the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir4 thyself: for then shall the LORD go out1 before thee, to smite53 the host of the Philistines.

25

And David did4 so, as the LORD had commanded14 him; and smote55 the Philistines from Geba until thou come2 to Gazer.
