The Second Book of Samuel

Chapter 22

1

And David spake17 unto the LORD the words of this song in the day [that] the LORD had delivered52 him out of the hand of all his enemies,6 and out of the hand of Saul:

2

And he said,4 The LORD [is] my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;18

3

The God of my rock; in him will I trust:4 [he is] my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour;56 thou savest55 me from violence.

4

I will call4 on the LORD, [who is] worthy to be praised:30 so shall I be saved11 from mine enemies.6

5

When the waves of death compassed1 me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid;17

6

The sorrows of hell compassed me about;1 the snares of death prevented14 me;

7

In my distress I called4 upon the LORD, and cried4 to my God: and he did hear4 my voice out of his temple, and my cry [did enter] into his ears.

8

Then the earth shook101 1607 4 and trembled;4 the foundations of heaven moved4 and shook,101 because he was wroth.1

9

There went up1 a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured:4 coals were kindled1 by it.

10

He bowed4 the heavens also, and came down;4 and darkness [was] under his feet.

11

And he rode4 upon a cherub, and did fly:4 and he was seen11 upon the wings of the wind.

12

And he made4 darkness pavilions round about him, dark waters, [and] thick clouds of the skies.

13

Through the brightness before him were coals of fire kindled.1

14

The LORD thundered55 from heaven, and the most High uttered4 his voice.

15

And he sent out4 arrows, and scattered55 them; lightning, and discomfited4 them.

16

And the channels of the sea appeared,11 the foundations of the world were discovered,11 at the rebuking of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.

17

He sent4 from above, he took4 me; he drew55 me out of many waters;

18

He delivered55 me from my strong enemy,6 [and] from them that hated6 me: for they were too strong1 for me.

19

They prevented17 me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my stay.

20

He brought me forth55 also into a large place: he delivered17 me, because he delighted1 in me.

21

The LORD rewarded4 me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed55 me.

22

For I have kept1 the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed1 from my God.

23

For all his judgments [were] before me: and [as for] his statutes, I did not depart4 from them.

24

I was also upright before him, and have kept101 myself from mine iniquity.

25

Therefore the LORD hath recompensed55 me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in his eye sight.

26

With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful,101 [and] with the upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright.101

27

With the pure12 thou wilt shew thyself pure;101 and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself unsavoury.101

28

And the afflicted people thou wilt save:55 but thine eyes [are] upon the haughty,6 [that] thou mayest bring [them] down.55

29

For thou [art] my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will lighten55 my darkness.

30

For by thee I have run4 through a troop: by my God have I leaped17 over a wall.

31

[As for] God, his way [is] perfect; the word of the LORD [is] tried:7 he [is] a buckler to all them that trust6 in him.

32

For who [is] God, save the LORD? and who [is] a rock, save our God?

33

God [is] my strength [and] power: and he maketh55 my way perfect.

34

He maketh my feet like18 hinds' [feet]: and setteth55 me upon my high places.

35

He teacheth18 my hands to war; so that a bow of steel is broken14 by mine arms.

36

Thou hast also given4 me the shield of thy salvation: and thy gentleness2 6038 hath made me great.55

37

Thou hast enlarged55 my steps under me; so that my feet did not slip.1

38

I have pursued4 mine enemies,6 and destroyed55 them; and turned not again4 until I had consumed15 them.

39

And I have consumed17 them, and wounded4 them, that they could not arise:4 yea, they are fallen4 under my feet.

40

For thou hast girded17 me with strength to battle: them that rose up5 against me hast thou subdued55 under me.

41

Thou hast also given1 me the necks of mine enemies,6 that I might destroy55 them that hate18 me.

42

They looked,4 but [there was] none to save;56 [even] unto the LORD, but he answered1 them not.

43

Then did I beat4 them as small as the dust of the earth, I did stamp55 them as the mire of the street, [and] did spread them abroad.4

44

Thou also hast delivered17 me from the strivings of my people, thou hast kept4 me [to be] head of the heathen: a people [which] I knew1 not shall serve4 me.

45

Strangers 5236 shall submit101 themselves unto me: as soon as they hear,2 241 they shall be obedient11 unto me.

46

Strangers 5236 shall fade away,4 and they shall be afraid4 out of their close places.

47

The LORD liveth; and blessed7 [be] my rock; and exalted4 be the God of the rock of my salvation.

48

It [is] God that avengeth6 5360 me, and that bringeth down56 the people under me,

49

And that bringeth me forth56 from mine enemies:6 thou also hast lifted me up on high34 above them that rose up5 against me: thou hast delivered55 me from the violent man.

50

Therefore I will give thanks55 unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises17 unto thy name.

51

[He is] the tower 1431 56 of salvation for his king: and sheweth6 mercy to his anointed, unto David, and to his seed for evermore.
