The First Book of the Kings

Chapter 9

1

And it came to pass, when Solomon had finished15 the building2 of the house of the LORD, and the king's house, and all Solomon's desire which he was pleased1 to do,2

2

That the LORD appeared11 to Solomon the second time, as he had appeared8 unto him at Gibeon.

3

And the LORD said4 unto him, I have heard1 thy prayer and thy supplication, that thou hast made98 before me: I have hallowed52 this house, which thou hast built,1 to put2 my name there for ever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually. 3117

4

And if thou wilt walk4 before me, as David thy father walked,1 in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do2 according to all that I have commanded14 thee, [and] wilt keep4 my statutes and my judgments:

5

Then I will establish52 the throne of thy kingdom upon Israel for ever, as I promised14 to David thy father, saying,2 There shall not fail11 thee a man upon the throne of Israel.

6

[But] if ye shall at all2 turn4 from following me, ye or your children, and will not keep4 my commandments [and] my statutes which I have set1 before you, but go1 and serve1 other gods, and worship98 them:

7

Then will I cut off52 Israel out of the land which I have given1 them; and this house, which I have hallowed52 for my name, will I cast out17 of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people:

8

And at this house, [which] is high, every one that passeth6 by it shall be astonished,4 and shall hiss;1 and they shall say,1 Why hath the LORD done1 thus unto this land, and to this house?

9

And they shall answer,1 Because they forsook1 the LORD their God, who brought forth52 their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have taken hold55 upon other gods, and have worshipped101 them, and served4 them: therefore hath the LORD brought52 upon them all this evil.

10

And it came to pass at the end of twenty years, when Solomon had built1 the two houses, the house of the LORD, and the king's house,

11

([Now] Hiram the king of Tyre had furnished14 Solomon with cedar trees and fir trees, and with gold, according to all his desire,) that then king Solomon gave4 Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee.

12

And Hiram came out4 from Tyre to see2 the cities which Solomon had given1 him; and they pleased1 5869 him not.

13

And he said,4 What cities [are] these which thou hast given1 me, my brother? And he called4 them the land of Cabul unto this day.

14

And Hiram sent4 to the king sixscore 6242 talents of gold.

15

And this [is] the reason of the levy which king Solomon raised;52 for to build2 the house of the LORD, and his own house, and Millo, and the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, and Megiddo, and Gezer.

16

[For] Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up,1 and taken4 Gezer, and burnt4 it with fire, and slain1 the Canaanites that dwelt6 in the city, and given4 it [for] a present unto his daughter, Solomon's wife.

17

And Solomon built4 Gezer, and Bethhoron the nether,

18

And Baalath, and Tadmor 8559 in the wilderness, in the land,

19

And all the cities of store that Solomon had, and cities for his chariots, and cities for his horsemen, and that which Solomon desired1 to build2 in Jerusalem, and in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion.

20

[And] all the people [that were] left12 of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, which [were] not of the children of Israel,

21

Their children that were left8 after them in the land, whom the children of Israel also were not able1 utterly to destroy,53 upon those did Solomon levy55 a tribute of bondservice6 unto this day.

22

But of the children of Israel did Solomon make1 no bondmen: but they [were] men of war, and his servants, and his princes, and his captains, and rulers of his chariots, and his horsemen.

23

These [were] the chief of the officers12 that [were] over Solomon's work, five hundred and fifty, which bare rule6 over the people that wrought6 in the work.

24

But Pharaoh's daughter came up1 out of the city of David unto her house which [Solomon] had built1 for her: then did he build1 Millo.

25

And three times in a year did Solomon offer52 burnt offerings and peace offerings upon the altar which he built1 unto the LORD, and he burnt incense53 upon the altar that [was] before the LORD. So he finished14 the house.

26

And king Solomon made1 a navy of ships in Eziongeber, which [is] beside Eloth, on the shore of the Red sea, in the land of Edom.

27

And Hiram sent4 in the navy his servants, shipmen 591 that had knowledge6 of the sea, with the servants of Solomon.

28

And they came4 to Ophir, and fetched4 from thence gold, four hundred and twenty talents, and brought55 [it] to king Solomon.
