The Second Book of the Kings

Chapter 13

1

In the three 8141 and twentieth year of Joash the son of Ahaziah king of Judah Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign1 over Israel in Samaria, [and reigned] seventeen 6240 years.

2

And he did4 [that which was] evil in the sight of the LORD, and followed4 310 the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin;52 he departed1 not therefrom.

3

And the anger of the LORD was kindled4 against Israel, and he delivered4 them into the hand of Hazael king of Syria, and into the hand of Benhadad the son of Hazael, all [their] days.

4

And Jehoahaz besought17 6440 the LORD, and the LORD hearkened4 unto him: for he saw1 the oppression of Israel, because the king of Syria oppressed1 them.

5

(And the LORD gave4 Israel a saviour,56 so that they went out4 from under the hand of the Syrians: and the children of Israel dwelt4 in their tents, as beforetime. 8543

6

Nevertheless they departed1 not from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, who made Israel sin,52 [but] walked1 therein: and there remained1 the grove also in Samaria.)

7

Neither did he leave52 of the people to Jehoahaz but fifty horsemen, and ten chariots, and ten thousand footmen; for the king of Syria had destroyed14 them, and had made4 them like the dust by threshing.2

8

Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, and all that he did,1 and his might, [are] they not written7 in the book of the chronicles 3117 of the kings of Israel?

9

And Jehoahaz slept4 with his fathers; and they buried4 him in Samaria: and Joash his son reigned4 in his stead.

10

In the thirty 8141 and seventh year of Joash king of Judah began Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz to reign1 over Israel in Samaria, [and reigned] sixteen 6240 years.

11

And he did4 [that which was] evil in the sight of the LORD; he departed1 not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel sin:52 [but] he walked1 therein.

12

And the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did,1 and his might wherewith he fought8 against Amaziah king of Judah, [are] they not written7 in the book of the chronicles 3117 of the kings of Israel?

13

And Joash slept4 with his fathers; and Jeroboam sat1 upon his throne: and Joash was buried11 in Samaria with the kings of Israel.

14

Now Elisha was fallen sick1 of his sickness whereof he died.4 And Joash the king of Israel came down4 unto him, and wept4 over his face, and said,4 O my father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof.

15

And Elisha said4 unto him, Take3 bow and arrows. And he took4 unto him bow and arrows.

16

And he said4 to the king of Israel, Put54 thine hand upon the bow. And he put55 his hand [upon it]: and Elisha put4 his hands upon the king's hands.

17

And he said,4 Open3 the window eastward. And he opened4 [it]. Then Elisha said,4 Shoot.3 And he shot.55 And he said,4 The arrow of the LORD'S deliverance, and the arrow of deliverance from Syria: for thou shalt smite52 the Syrians in Aphek, till thou have consumed15 [them].

18

And he said,4 Take3 the arrows. And he took4 [them]. And he said4 unto the king of Israel, Smite54 upon the ground. And he smote55 thrice, 6471 and stayed.4

19

And the man of God was wroth4 with him, and said,4 Thou shouldest have smitten53 five or six times; then hadst thou smitten52 Syria till thou hadst consumed15 [it]: whereas now thou shalt smite55 Syria [but] thrice. 6471

20

And Elisha died,4 and they buried4 him. And the bands of the Moabites invaded4 the land at the coming in6 of the year.

21

And it came to pass, as they were burying6 a man, that, behold, they spied1 a band [of men]; and they cast55 the man into the sepulchre of Elisha: and when the man was let down,4 and touched4 the bones of Elisha, he revived,4 and stood up4 on his feet.

22

But Hazael king of Syria oppressed1 Israel all the days of Jehoahaz.

23

And the LORD was gracious4 unto them, and had compassion17 on them, and had respect4 unto them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would1 not destroy53 them, neither cast52 he them from his presence as yet.

24

So Hazael king of Syria died;4 and Benhadad his son reigned4 in his stead.

25

And Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took4 again4 out of the hand of Benhadad the son of Hazael the cities, which he had taken1 out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father by war. Three times did Joash beat52 him, and recovered55 the cities of Israel.
