The Book of Job

Chapter 2

1

Again there was a day when the sons of God came4 to present99 themselves before the LORD, and Satan came4 also among them to present99 himself before the LORD.

2

And the LORD said4 unto Satan, From whence comest4 thou? And Satan answered4 the LORD, and said,4 From going to and fro2 in the earth, and from walking up and down99 in it.

3

And the LORD said4 unto Satan, Hast thou considered1 3820 my servant Job, that [there is] none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth6 evil? and still he holdeth56 fast his integrity, although thou movedst55 me against him, to destroy15 him without cause.

4

And Satan answered4 the LORD, and said,4 Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give4 for his life.

5

But put forth3 thine hand now, and touch3 his bone and his flesh, and he will curse17 thee to thy face.

6

And the LORD said4 unto Satan, Behold, he [is] in thine hand; but save3 his life.

7

So went Satan forth4 from the presence of the LORD, and smote55 Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

8

And he took4 him a potsherd to scrape99 himself withal; and he sat down6 among the ashes.

9

Then said4 his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain56 thine integrity? curse16 God, and die.3

10

But he said4 unto her, Thou speakest17 as one of the foolish women speaketh.15 What? shall we receive17 good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive17 evil? In all this did not Job sin1 with his lips.

11

Now when Job's three friends heard4 of all this evil that was come6 upon him, they came4 every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment11 together to come2 to mourn2 with him and to comfort15 him.

12

And when they lifted up4 their eyes afar off, and knew52 him not, they lifted up4 their voice, and wept;4 and they rent4 every one his mantle, and sprinkled4 dust upon their heads toward heaven.

13

So they sat down4 with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake6 a word unto him: for they saw1 that [his] grief was very great.1
