Chapter 137

By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down,¹ yea, we wept,¹ when we remembered² Zion.

We hanged¹ our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.

For there they that carried us away captive⁶ required¹ of us a song; ⁷⁸⁹² and they that wasted us [required of us] mirth, [saying], Sing³ us [one] of the songs of Zion.

How shall we sing⁴ the LORD'S song in a strange land?

If I forget⁴ thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget⁴ [her cunning].

If I do not remember⁴ thee, let my tongue cleave⁴ to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer⁵⁵ not Jerusalem above my chief joy.

Remember,³ O LORD, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said,⁶ Rase¹⁶ [it], rase¹⁶ [it, even] to the foundation thereof.

O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed;⁷ happy [shall he be], that rewardeth¹⁷ thee as thou hast served^{1 1576} us.

Happy [shall he be], that taketh⁴ and dasheth¹⁴ thy little ones against the stones.
