The Book of the Prophet Isaiah

Chapter 42

1

Behold my servant, whom I uphold;4 mine elect, [in whom] my soul delighteth;1 I have put1 my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth55 judgment to the Gentiles.

2

He shall not cry,4 nor lift up,4 nor cause his voice to be heard55 in the street.

3

A bruised7 reed shall he not break,4 and the smoking flax shall he not quench:17 he shall bring forth55 judgment unto truth.

4

He shall not fail4 nor be discouraged,4 till he have set4 judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait17 for his law.

5

Thus saith1 God the LORD, he that created6 the heavens, and stretched them out;6 he that spread forth6 the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth6 breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk6 therein:

6

I the LORD have called1 thee in righteousness, and will hold55 thine hand, and will keep4 thee, and give4 thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;

7

To open2 the blind eyes, to bring out53 the prisoners from the prison, [and] them that sit6 in darkness out of the prison house.

8

I [am] the LORD: that [is] my name: and my glory will I not give4 to another, neither my praise to graven images.

9

Behold, the former things are come to pass,1 and new things do I declare:56 before they spring forth4 I tell55 you of them.

10

Sing3 unto the LORD a new song, [and] his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down6 to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants6 thereof.

11

Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up4 [their voice], the villages [that] Kedar doth inhabit:4 let the inhabitants6 of the rock sing,4 let them shout4 from the top of the mountains.

12

Let them give4 glory unto the LORD, and declare55 his praise in the islands.

13

The LORD shall go forth4 as a mighty man, he shall stir up55 jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry,55 yea, roar;55 he shall prevail101 against his enemies.6

14

I have long time holden my peace;52 I have been still,55 [and] refrained101 myself: [now] will I cry4 like a travailing woman;6 I will destroy4 8074 4 and devour4 at once.

15

I will make waste55 mountains and hills, and dry up55 all their herbs; and I will make1 the rivers islands, and I will dry up55 the pools.

16

And I will bring52 the blind by a way [that] they knew1 not; I will lead55 them in paths [that] they have not known:1 I will make4 darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do1 unto them, and not forsake1 them.

17

They shall be turned8 back, they shall be greatly ashamed,4 that trust6 in graven images, that say6 to the molten images, Ye [are] our gods.

18

Hear,3 ye deaf; and look,54 ye blind, that ye may see.2

19

Who [is] blind, but my servant? or deaf, as my messenger [that] I sent?4 who [is] blind as [he that is] perfect,30 and blind as the LORD'S servant?

20

Seeing2 7200 1 many things, but thou observest4 not; opening2 the ears, but he heareth4 not.

21

The LORD is well pleased1 for his righteousness' sake; he will magnify55 the law, and make [it] honourable.55

22

But this [is] a people robbed7 and spoiled;7 [they are] all of them snared53 in holes, 970 and they are hid90 in prison houses: they are for a prey, and none delivereth;56 for a spoil, and none saith,6 Restore.54

23

Who among you will give ear55 to this? [who] will hearken55 and hear4 for the time to come?

24

Who gave1 Jacob for a spoil, 4882 and Israel to the robbers?6 did not the LORD, he against whom we have sinned?1 for they would1 not walk2 in his ways, neither were they obedient1 unto his law.

25

Therefore he hath poured4 upon him the fury of his anger, and the strength of battle: and it hath set him on fire17 round about, yet he knew1 not; and it burned4 him, yet he laid4 [it] not to heart.
