The Book of the Prophet Isaiah

Chapter 61

1

The Spirit of the Lord GOD [is] upon me; because the LORD hath anointed1 me to preach good tidings15 unto the meek; he hath sent1 me to bind up2 the brokenhearted,12 3820 to proclaim2 liberty to the captives,7 and the opening of the prison to [them that are] bound;7

2

To proclaim2 the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort15 all that mourn;

3

To appoint2 unto them that mourn in Zion, to give2 unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called27 trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.99

4

And they shall build1 the old wastes, they shall raise up34 the former desolations,6 and they shall repair14 the waste cities, the desolations6 of many generations.

5

And strangers5 shall stand1 and feed1 your flocks, and the sons of the alien [shall be] your plowmen and your vinedressers.

6

But ye shall be named11 the Priests of the LORD: [men] shall call11 you the Ministers18 of our God: ye shall eat4 the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast101 yourselves.

7

For your shame [ye shall have] double; and [for] confusion they shall rejoice4 in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess4 the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them.

8

For I the LORD love6 judgment, I hate6 robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct1 their work in truth, and I will make4 an everlasting covenant with them.

9

And their seed shall be known8 among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people: all that see6 them shall acknowledge55 them, that they [are] the seed [which] the LORD hath blessed.14

10

I will greatly2 rejoice4 in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful4 in my God; for he hath clothed52 me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered1 me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh17 [himself] with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth4 [herself] with her jewels.

11

For as the earth bringeth forth55 her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth;55 so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth55 before all the nations.
