The Book of Amos

Chapter 7

1

Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed52 unto me; and, behold, he formed6 grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up2 of the latter growth; and, lo, [it was] the latter growth after the king's mowings.

2

And it came to pass, [that] when they had made an end14 of eating2 the grass of the land, then I said,4 O Lord GOD, forgive,3 I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise?4 for he [is] small.

3

The LORD repented8 for this: It shall not be, saith1 the LORD.

4

Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed52 unto me: and, behold, the Lord GOD called6 to contend2 by fire, and it devoured4 the great deep, and did eat1 up a part.

5

Then said4 I, O Lord GOD, cease,3 I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise?4 for he [is] small.

6

The LORD repented8 for this: This also shall not be, saith1 the Lord GOD.

7

Thus he shewed52 me: and, behold, the Lord stood12 upon a wall [made] by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.

8

And the LORD said4 unto me, Amos, what seest6 thou? And I said,4 A plumbline. Then said4 the Lord, Behold, I will set6 a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again55 pass2 by them any more:

9

And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate,8 and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste;4 and I will rise1 against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

10

Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent4 to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying,2 Amos hath conspired1 against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able4 to bear53 all his words.

11

For thus Amos saith,1 Jeroboam shall die4 by the sword, and Israel shall surely2 be led away captive4 out of their own land.

12

Also Amaziah said4 unto Amos, O thou seer, go,3 flee thee away3 into the land of Judah, and there eat3 bread, and prophesy11 there:

13

But prophesy9 not again55 any more at Bethel: for it [is] the king's chapel, and it [is] the king's court.

14

Then answered4 Amos, and said4 to Amaziah, I [was] no prophet, neither [was] I a prophet's son; but I [was] an herdman, and a gatherer6 of sycomore fruit:

15

And the LORD took4 me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said4 unto me, Go,3 prophesy10 unto my people Israel.

16

Now therefore hear3 thou the word of the LORD: Thou sayest,6 Prophesy11 not against Israel, and drop55 not [thy word] against the house of Isaac.

17

Therefore thus saith1 the LORD; Thy wife shall be an harlot4 in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall4 by the sword, and thy land shall be divided29 by line; and thou shalt die4 in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely2 go into captivity4 forth of his land.
