The Book of Habakkuk

Chapter 3

1

A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet upon Shigionoth.

2

O LORD, I have heard1 thy speech, [and] was afraid:1 O LORD, revive16 thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known;55 in wrath remember4 mercy.15

3

God came4 from Teman, 8486 and the Holy One from mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered14 the heavens, and the earth was full1 of his praise.

4

And [his] brightness was as the light; he had horns [coming] out of his hand: and there [was] the hiding of his power.

5

Before him went4 the pestilence, and burning coals went forth4 at his feet.

6

He stood,1 and measured34 the earth: he beheld,1 and drove asunder55 the nations; and the everlasting mountains were scattered,101 the perpetual hills did bow:1 his ways [are] everlasting.

7

I saw1 the tents of Cushan in affliction: [and] the curtains of the land of Midian did tremble.4

8

Was the LORD displeased1 against the rivers? [was] thine anger against the rivers? [was] thy wrath against the sea, that thou didst ride4 upon thine horses [and] thy chariots of salvation?

9

Thy bow was made quite naked,11 [according] to the oaths of the tribes, [even thy] word. Selah. Thou didst cleave17 the earth with rivers.

10

The mountains saw1 thee, [and] they trembled:4 the overflowing of the water passed by:1 the deep uttered1 his voice, [and] lifted up1 his hands on high.

11

The sun [and] moon stood still1 in their habitation: at the light of thine arrows they went,17 [and] at the shining of thy glittering spear.

12

Thou didst march through4 the land in indignation, thou didst thresh4 the heathen in anger.

13

Thou wentest forth1 for the salvation of thy people, [even] for salvation with thine anointed; thou woundedst1 the head out of the house of the wicked, by discovering15 the foundation unto the neck. Selah.

14

Thou didst strike through1 with his staves the head of his villages: they came out as a whirlwind4 to scatter53 me: their rejoicing [was] as to devour2 the poor secretly.

15

Thou didst walk1 through the sea with thine horses, [through] the heap of great waters.

16

When I heard,1 my belly trembled;4 my lips quivered1 at the voice: rottenness entered4 into my bones, and I trembled4 in myself, that I might rest4 in the day of trouble: when he cometh up2 unto the people, he will invade4 them with his troops.

17

Although the fig tree shall not blossom,4 neither [shall] fruit [be] in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail,14 and the fields shall yield1 no meat; the flock shall be cut off1 from the fold, and [there shall be] no herd in the stalls:

18

Yet I will rejoice4 in the LORD, I will joy4 in the God of my salvation.

19

The LORD God [is] my strength, and he will make4 my feet like hinds' [feet], and he will make me to walk55 upon mine high places. To the chief singer18 on my stringed instruments.
