The Book of Malachi

Chapter 1

1

The burden of the word of the LORD to Israel by Malachi.

2

I have loved1 you, saith1 the LORD. Yet ye say,1 Wherein hast thou loved1 us? [Was] not Esau Jacob's brother? saith7 the LORD: yet I loved4 Jacob,

3

And I hated1 Esau, and laid4 his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.

4

Whereas Edom saith,4 We are impoverished,27 but we will return4 and build4 the desolate places; thus saith1 the LORD of hosts, They shall build,4 but I will throw down;4 and they shall call1 them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the LORD hath indignation1 for ever.

5

And your eyes shall see,4 and ye shall say,4 The LORD will be magnified4 from the border of Israel.

6

A son honoureth17 [his] father, and a servant his master: if then I [be] a father, where [is] mine honour? and if I [be] a master, where [is] my fear? saith1 the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise6 my name. And ye say,1 Wherein have we despised1 thy name?

7

Ye offer56 polluted30 bread upon mine altar; and ye say,1 Wherein have we polluted14 thee? In that ye say,2 The table of the LORD [is] contemptible.12

8

And if ye offer55 the blind for sacrifice,2 [is it] not evil? and if ye offer55 the lame and sick,6 [is it] not evil? offer54 it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased4 with thee, or accept4 thy person? saith1 the LORD of hosts.

9

And now, I pray you, beseech16 6440 God that he will be gracious4 unto us: this hath been by your means: will he regard4 your persons? saith1 the LORD of hosts.

10

Who [is there] even among you that would shut4 the doors [for nought]? neither do ye kindle55 [fire] on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you, saith1 the LORD of hosts, neither will I accept4 an offering at your hand.

11

For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name [shall be] great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense94 [shall be] offered94 unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name [shall be] great among the heathen, saith1 the LORD of hosts.

12

But ye have profaned18 it, in that ye say,2 The table of the LORD [is] polluted;30 and the fruit thereof, [even] his meat, [is] contemptible.12

13

Ye said1 also, Behold, what a weariness [is it]! and ye have snuffed52 at it, saith1 the LORD of hosts; and ye brought52 [that which was] torn,7 and the lame, and the sick;6 thus ye brought52 an offering: should I accept4 this of your hand? saith1 the LORD.

14

But cursed7 [be] the deceiver,6 which hath in his flock a male, and voweth,6 and sacrificeth6 unto the Lord a corrupt thing:94 for I [am] a great King, saith1 the LORD of hosts, and my name [is] dreadful12 among the heathen.
