Chapter 1

The burden of the word of the LORD to Israel by Malachi.

I have loved¹ you, saith¹ the LORD. Yet ye say,¹ Wherein hast thou loved¹ us? [Was] not Esau Jacob's brother? saith⁷ the LORD: yet I loved⁴ Jacob,

And I hated¹ Esau, and laid⁴ his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.

Whereas Edom saith,⁴ We are impoverished,²⁷ but we will return⁴ and build⁴ the desolate places; thus saith¹ the LORD of hosts, They shall build,⁴ but I will throw down;⁴ and they shall call¹ them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the LORD hath indignation¹ for ever.

And your eyes shall see,⁴ and ye shall say,⁴ The LORD will be magnified⁴ from the border of Israel.

A son honoureth¹⁷ [his] father, and a servant his master: if then I [be] a father, where [is] mine honour? and if I [be] a master, where [is] my fear? saith¹ the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise⁶ my name. And ye say,¹ Wherein have we despised¹ thy name?

Ye offer⁵⁶ polluted³⁰ bread upon mine altar; and ye say,¹ Wherein have we polluted¹⁴ thee? In that ye say,² The table of the LORD [is] contemptible.¹²

And if ye offer⁵⁵ the blind for sacrifice,² [is it] not evil? and if ye offer⁵⁵ the lame and sick,⁶ [is it] not evil? offer⁵⁴ it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased⁴ with thee, or accept⁴ thy person? saith¹ the LORD of hosts.

And now, I pray you, beseech^{16 6440} God that he will be gracious⁴ unto us: this hath been by your means: will he regard⁴ your persons? saith¹ the LORD of hosts.

Who [is there] even among you that would shut⁴ the doors [for nought]? neither do ye kindle⁵⁵ [fire] on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you, saith¹ the LORD of hosts, neither will I accept⁴ an offering at your hand.

For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name [shall be] great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense⁹⁴ [shall be] offered⁹⁴ unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name [shall be] great among the heathen, saith¹ the LORD of hosts.

But ye have profaned¹⁸ it, in that ye say,² The table of the LORD [is] polluted;³⁰ and the fruit thereof, [even] his meat, [is] contemptible.¹²

Ye said¹ also, Behold, what a weariness [is it]! and ye have snuffed⁵² at it, saith¹ the LORD of hosts; and ye brought⁵² [that which was] torn,⁷ and the lame, and the sick;⁶ thus ye brought⁵² an offering: should I accept⁴ this of your hand? saith¹ the LORD.

But cursed⁷ [be] the deceiver,⁶ which hath in his flock a male, and voweth,⁶ and sacrificeth⁶ unto the Lord a corrupt thing:⁹⁴ for I [am] a great King, saith¹ the LORD of hosts, and my name [is] dreadful¹² among the heathen.
