The First Book of Moses, called Genesis

Chapter 39

1

And Joseph was brought down90 to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, 4713 bought4 him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down52 thither.

2

And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous56 man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

3

And his master saw4 that the LORD [was] with him, and that the LORD made all that he did6 to prosper56 in his hand.

4

And Joseph found4 grace in his sight, and he served17 him: and he made him overseer55 over his house, and all [that] he had he put1 into his hand.

5

And it came to pass from the time [that] he had made him overseer52 in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed17 the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.

6

And he left4 all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew1 not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat.6 And Joseph was [a] goodly 8389 [person], and well favoured.

7

And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast4 her eyes upon Joseph; and she said,4 Lie3 with me.

8

But he refused,17 and said4 unto his master's wife, Behold, my master wotteth1 not what [is] with me in the house, and he hath committed1 all that he hath to my hand;

9

[There is] none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back1 any thing from me but thee, because thou [art] his wife: how then can I do4 this great wickedness, and sin1 against God?

10

And it came to pass, as she spake15 to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened1 not unto her, to lie2 by her, [or] to be with her.

11

And it came to pass about this time, that [Joseph] went4 into the house to do2 his business; and [there was] none of the men 582 of the house there within.

12

And she caught4 him by his garment, saying,2 Lie3 with me: and he left4 his garment in her hand, and fled,4 and got him4 out.

13

And it came to pass, when she saw2 that he had left1 his garment in her hand, and was fled4 forth,

14

That she called4 unto the men of her house, and spake4 unto them, saying,2 See,3 he hath brought in52 an Hebrew 5680 unto us to mock15 us; he came in1 unto me to lie2 with me, and I cried4 with a loud voice:

15

And it came to pass, when he heard2 that I lifted up52 my voice and cried,4 that he left4 his garment with me, and fled,4 and got him4 out.

16

And she laid up55 his garment by her, until his lord came2 home.

17

And she spake17 unto him according to these words, saying,2 The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought52 unto us, came in1 unto me to mock15 me:

18

And it came to pass, as I lifted up53 my voice and cried,4 that he left4 his garment with me, and fled4 out.

19

And it came to pass, when his master heard2 the words of his wife, which she spake14 unto him, saying,2 After this manner did1 thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled.4

20

And Joseph's master took4 him, and put4 him into the prison, 5470 a place where the king's prisoners [were] bound:7 and he was there in the prison. 5470

21

But the LORD was with Joseph, and shewed4 him mercy, and gave4 him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison. 5470

22

And the keeper of the prison 5470 committed4 to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that [were] in the prison; 5470 and whatsoever they did6 there, he was the doer6 [of it].

23

The keeper of the prison 5470 looked6 not to any thing [that was] under his hand; because the LORD was with him, and [that] which he did,6 the LORD made [it] to prosper.56
