The Second Book of the Kings

Chapter 12

1

In the seventh year of Jehu Jehoash began to reign;1 and forty years reigned1 he in Jerusalem. And his mother's name [was] Zibiah of Beersheba.

2

And Jehoash did4 [that which was] right in the sight of the LORD all his days wherein Jehoiada the priest instructed52 him.

3

But the high places were not taken away:1 the people still sacrificed18 and burnt incense18 in the high places.

4

And Jehoash said4 to the priests, All the money of the dedicated things that is brought into93 the house of the LORD, [even] the money of every one that passeth6 [the account], the money that every man is set at, [and] all the money that cometh4 into any man's heart to bring53 into the house of the LORD,

5

Let the priests take4 [it] to them, every man of his acquaintance: and let them repair17 the breaches of the house, wheresoever any breach shall be found.11

6

But it was [so, that] in the three 8141 and twentieth year of king Jehoash the priests had not repaired14 the breaches of the house.

7

Then king Jehoash called4 for Jehoiada the priest, and the [other] priests, and said4 unto them, Why repair18 ye not the breaches of the house? now therefore receive4 no [more] money of your acquaintance, but deliver4 it for the breaches of the house.

8

And the priests consented11 to receive2 no [more] money of the people, neither to repair15 the breaches of the house.

9

But Jehoiada the priest took4 a chest, and bored4 a hole in the lid of it, and set4 it beside the altar, on the right side as one cometh2 into the house of the LORD: and the priests that kept6 the door put1 therein all the money [that was] brought into94 the house of the LORD.

10

And it was [so], when they saw2 that [there was] much money in the chest, that the king's scribe6 and the high priest came up,4 and they put up in bags,4 and told4 the money that was found12 in the house of the LORD.

11

And they gave1 the money, being told,30 into the hands of them that did6 the work, that had the oversight94 6485 7 of the house of the LORD: and they laid it out55 to the carpenters 6086 and builders,6 that wrought6 upon the house of the LORD,

12

And to masons,6 and hewers6 of stone, and to buy2 timber and hewed stone to repair15 the breaches of the house of the LORD, and for all that was laid out4 for the house to repair [it].

13

Howbeit there were not made11 for the house of the LORD bowls of silver, snuffers, basons, trumpets, any vessels of gold, or vessels of silver, of the money [that was] brought into94 the house of the LORD:

14

But they gave4 that to the workmen, 6213 6 and repaired14 therewith the house of the LORD.

15

Moreover they reckoned17 not with the men, into whose hand they delivered4 the money to be bestowed2 on workmen:6 4399 for they dealt6 faithfully.

16

The trespass money and sin money was not brought into93 the house of the LORD: it was the priests'.

17

Then Hazael king of Syria went up,4 and fought11 against Gath, and took4 it: and Hazael set4 his face to go up2 to Jerusalem.

18

And Jehoash king of Judah took4 all the hallowed things that Jehoshaphat, and Jehoram, and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated,52 and his own hallowed things, and all the gold [that was] found12 in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and in the king's house, and sent4 [it] to Hazael king of Syria: and he went away4 from Jerusalem.

19

And the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did,1 [are] they not written7 in the book of the chronicles 3117 of the kings of Judah?

20

And his servants arose,4 and made4 a conspiracy, and slew55 Joash in the house of Millo, which goeth down6 to Silla.

21

For Jozachar the son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad the son of Shomer, his servants, smote52 him, and he died;4 and they buried4 him with his fathers in the city of David: and Amaziah his son reigned4 in his stead.
