Chapter 8

All the commandments which I command¹⁸ thee this day shall ye observe⁴ to do,² that ye may live,⁴ and multiply,¹ and go in¹ and possess¹ the land which the LORD sware⁸ unto your fathers.

And thou shalt remember¹ all the way which the LORD thy God led⁵² thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble¹⁵ thee, [and] to prove¹⁵ thee, to know² what [was] in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep⁴ his commandments, or no.

And he humbled¹⁷ thee, and suffered thee to hunger,⁵⁵ and fed⁵⁵ thee with manna, which thou knewest¹ not, neither did thy fathers know;¹ that he might make thee know⁵³ that man doth not live⁴ by bread only, but by every [word] that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.⁴

Thy raiment waxed not old¹ upon thee, neither did thy foot swell,¹ these forty years.

Thou shalt also consider¹ in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth¹⁷ his son, [so] the LORD thy God chasteneth¹⁸ thee.

Therefore thou shalt keep¹ the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk² in his ways, and to fear² him.

For the LORD thy God bringeth⁵⁶ thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out⁶ of valleys and hills;

A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey;

A land wherein thou shalt eat⁴ bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack⁴ any [thing] in it; a land whose stones [are] iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig⁴ brass.

When thou hast eaten¹ and art full,¹ then thou shalt bless¹⁴ the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given¹ thee.

Beware¹⁰ that thou forget⁴ not the LORD thy God, in not keeping² his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command¹⁸ thee this day:

Lest [when] thou hast eaten⁴ and art full,¹ and hast built⁴ goodly houses, and dwelt¹ [therein];

And [when] thy herds and thy flocks multiply,⁴ and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied,⁴ and all that thou hast is multiplied;⁴

Then thine heart be lifted up,¹ and thou forget¹ the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth⁵⁶ out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;

Who led⁵⁶ thee through that great and terrible¹² wilderness, [wherein were] fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where [there was] no water; who brought thee forth⁵⁶ water out of the rock of flint;

Who fed⁵⁶ thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew¹ not, that he might humble¹⁵ thee, and that he might prove¹⁵ thee, to do thee good⁵³ at thy latter end;

And thou say¹ in thine heart, My power and the might of [mine] hand hath gotten¹ me this wealth.

But thou shalt remember¹ the LORD thy God: for [it is] he that giveth⁶ thee power to get² wealth, that he may establish⁵³ his covenant which he sware⁸ unto thy fathers, as [it is] this day.

And it shall be, if thou do at all² forget⁴ the LORD thy God, and walk¹ after other gods, and serve¹ them, and worship⁹⁸ them, I testify⁵² against you this day that ye shall surely² perish.⁴

As the nations which the LORD destroyeth⁵⁶ before your face, so shall ye perish;⁴ because ye would not be obedient⁴ unto the voice of the LORD your God.
