The First Book of the Kings

Chapter 17

1

And Elijah the Tishbite, [who was] of the inhabitants of Gilead, said4 unto Ahab, [As] the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand,1 there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

2

And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,2

3

Get3 thee hence, and turn1 thee eastward, and hide8 thyself by the brook Cherith, that [is] before Jordan.

4

And it shall be, [that] thou shalt drink4 of the brook; and I have commanded14 the ravens to feed44 thee there.

5

So he went4 and did4 according unto the word of the LORD: for he went4 and dwelt4 by the brook Cherith, that [is] before Jordan.

6

And the ravens brought56 him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank4 of the brook.

7

And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up,4 because there had been no rain in the land.

8

And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,2

9

Arise,3 get3 thee to Zarephath, which [belongeth] to Zidon, and dwell1 there: behold, I have commanded14 a widow woman there to sustain44 thee.

10

So he arose4 and went4 to Zarephath. And when he came4 to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman [was] there gathering26 of sticks: and he called4 to her, and said,4 Fetch3 me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.4

11

And as she was going4 to fetch2 [it], he called4 to her, and said,4 Bring3 me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.

12

And she said,4 [As] the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful 3709 of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I [am] gathering26 two sticks, that I may go in1 and dress1 it for me and my son, that we may eat1 it, and die.1

13

And Elijah said4 unto her, Fear4 not; go3 [and] do3 as thou hast said: but make3 me thereof a little cake first, and bring52 [it] unto me, and after make4 for thee and for thy son.

14

For thus saith1 the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste,4 neither shall the cruse of oil fail,4 until the day [that] the LORD sendeth2 rain upon the earth.

15

And she went4 and did4 according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat4 [many] days.

16

[And] the barrel of meal wasted1 not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake14 by Elijah.

17

And it came to pass after these things, [that] the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick;1 and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left8 in him.

18

And she said4 unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come1 unto me to call my sin to remembrance,53 and to slay53 my son?

19

And he said4 unto her, Give3 me thy son. And he took4 him out of her bosom, and carried him up55 into a loft, where he abode,6 and laid55 him upon his own bed.

20

And he cried4 unto the LORD, and said,4 O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil52 upon the widow with whom I sojourn,114 by slaying53 her son?

21

And he stretched113 himself upon the child three times, and cried4 unto the LORD, and said,4 O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again.4

22

And the LORD heard4 the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again,4 and he revived.4

23

And Elijah took4 the child, and brought him down55 out of the chamber into the house, and delivered4 him unto his mother: and Elijah said,4 See,3 thy son liveth.

24

And the woman said4 to Elijah, Now by this I know1 that thou [art] a man of God, [and] that the word of the LORD in thy mouth [is] truth.
