Chapter 1

There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name [was] Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed⁶ evil.

And there were born¹¹ unto him seven sons and three daughters.

His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.

And his sons went¹ and feasted ^{6213 1} [in their] houses, every one his day; and sent¹ and called¹ for their three sisters to eat² and to drink² with them.

And it was so, when the days of [their] feasting were gone about,⁵² that Job sent⁴ and sanctified¹⁷ them, and rose up early⁵² in the morning, and offered⁵² burnt offerings [according] to the number of them all: for Job said,¹ It may be that my sons have sinned,¹ and cursed¹⁴ God in their hearts. Thus did⁴ Job continually. ³¹¹⁷

Now there was a day when the sons of God came⁴ to present⁹⁹ themselves before the LORD, and Satan came⁴ also among them.

And the LORD said⁴ unto Satan, Whence comest⁴ thou? Then Satan answered⁴ the LORD, and said,⁴ From going to and fro² in the earth, and from walking up and down⁹⁹ in it.

And the LORD said⁴ unto Satan, Hast thou considered^{1 3820} my servant Job, that [there is] none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth⁶ evil?

Then Satan answered⁴ the LORD, and said,⁴ Doth Job fear¹ God for nought?

Hast not thou made an hedge¹ about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed¹⁴ the work of his hands, and his substance is increased¹ in the land.

But put forth³ thine hand now, and touch³ all that he hath, and he will curse¹⁷ thee to thy face.

And the LORD said⁴ unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath [is] in thy power; only upon himself put not forth⁴ thine hand. So Satan went forth⁴ from the presence of the LORD.

And there was a day when his sons and his daughters [were] eating⁶ and drinking⁶ wine in their eldest brother's house:

And there came¹ a messenger unto Job, and said,⁴ The oxen were plowing,⁶ and the asses feeding⁶ beside them:

And the Sabeans fell⁴ [upon them], and took them away;⁴ yea, they have slain⁵² the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped¹¹ alone to tell⁵³ thee.

While he [was] yet speaking,¹⁸ there came⁶ also another, and said,⁴ The fire of God is fallen¹ from heaven, and hath burned up⁴ the sheep, and the servants, and consumed⁴ them; and I only am escaped¹¹ alone to tell⁵³ thee.

While he [was] yet speaking,¹⁸ there came⁶ also another, and said,⁴ The Chaldeans made out¹ three bands, and fell⁴ upon the camels, and have carried them away,⁴ yea, and slain⁵² the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped¹¹ alone to tell⁵³ thee.

While he [was] yet speaking,¹⁸ there came⁶ also another, and said,⁴ Thy sons and thy daughters [were] eating⁶ and drinking⁶ wine in their eldest brother's house:

And, behold, there came¹ a great wind from the wilderness, and smote⁴ the four corners of the house, and it fell⁴ upon the young men, and they are dead;⁴ and I only am escaped¹¹ alone to tell⁵³ thee.

Then Job arose,⁴ and rent⁴ his mantle, and shaved⁴ his head, and fell down⁴ upon the ground, and worshipped,¹⁰¹

And said,⁴ Naked came I out¹ of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return⁴ thither: the LORD gave,¹ and the LORD hath taken away;¹ blessed³⁰ be the name of the LORD.

In all this Job sinned¹ not, nor charged¹ God foolishly.
