Chapter 20

kai egeneto en mia twn hmerwn ekeinwn didaskontoV autou ton laon en tw ierw kai euaggelizomenou epesthsan oi arciereiV kai oi grammateiV sun toiV presbuteroiV
20:1 And it came to pass, [that] on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon [him] with the elders,

kai eipon proV auton legonteV eipe hmin en poia exousia tauta poieiV h tiV estin o douV soi thn exousian tauthn
20:2 And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?

apokriqeiV de eipen proV autouV erwthsw umaV kagw ena logon kai eipate moi
20:3 And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:

to baptisma iwannou ex ouranou hn h ex anqrwpwn
20:4 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?

oi de sunelogisanto proV eautouV legonteV oti ean eipwmen ex ouranou erei diati oun ouk episteusate autw
20:5 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?

ean de eipwmen ex anqrwpwn paV o laoV kataliqasei hmaV pepeismenoV gar estin iwannhn profhthn einai
20:6 But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.

kai apekriqhsan mh eidenai poqen
20:7 And they answered, that they could not tell whence [it was].

kai o ihsouV eipen autoiV oude egw legw umin en poia exousia tauta poiw
20:8 And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

hrxato de proV ton laon legein thn parabolhn tauthn anqrwpoV tiV efuteusen ampelwna kai exedoto auton gewrgoiV kai apedhmhsen cronouV ikanouV
20:9 Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time.

kai en kairw apesteilen proV touV gewrgouV doulon ina apo tou karpou tou ampelwnoV dwsin autw oi de gewrgoi deiranteV auton exapesteilan kenon
20:10 And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent [him] away empty.

kai proseqeto pemyai eteron doulon oi de kakeinon deiranteV kai atimasanteV exapesteilan kenon
20:11 And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated [him] shamefully, and sent [him] away empty.

kai proseqeto pemyai triton oi de kai touton traumatisanteV exebalon
20:12 And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast [him] out.

eipen de o kurioV tou ampelwnoV ti poihsw pemyw ton uion mou ton agaphton iswV touton idonteV entraphsontai
20:13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence [him] when they see him.

idonteV de auton oi gewrgoi dielogizonto proV eautouV legonteV outoV estin o klhronomoV deute apokteinwmen auton ina hmwn genhtai h klhronomia
20:14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

kai ekbalonteV auton exw tou ampelwnoV apekteinan ti oun poihsei autoiV o kurioV tou ampelwnoV
20:15 So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed [him]. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?

16

eleusetai kai apolesei touV gewrgouV toutouV kai dwsei ton ampelwna alloiV akousanteV de eipon mh genoito
20:16 He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard [it], they said, God forbid.

17

o de embleyaV autoiV eipen ti oun estin to gegrammenon touto liqon on apedokimasan oi oikodomounteV outoV egenhqh eiV kefalhn gwniaV
20:17 And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?

18

paV o peswn ep ekeinon ton liqon sunqlasqhsetai ef on d an pesh likmhsei auton
20:18 Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

19

kai ezhthsan oi arciereiV kai oi grammateiV epibalein ep auton taV ceiraV en auth th wra kai efobhqhsan ton laon egnwsan gar oti proV autouV thn parabolhn tauthn eipen
20:19 And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.

kai parathrhsanteV apesteilan egkaqetouV upokrinomenouV eautouV dikaiouV einai ina epilabwntai autou logou eiV to paradounai auton th arch kai th exousia tou hgemonoV
20:20 And they watched [him], and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.

kai ephrwthsan auton legonteV didaskale oidamen oti orqwV legeiV kai didaskeiV kai ou lambaneiV proswpon all ep alhqeiaV thn odon tou qeou didaskeiV
20:21 And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person [of any], but teachest the way of God truly:

exestin hmin kaisari foron dounai h ou
20:22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no?

katanohsaV de autwn thn panourgian eipen proV autouV ti me peirazete
20:23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?

24

epideixate moi dhnarion tinoV ecei eikona kai epigrafhn apokriqenteV de eipon kaisaroV
20:24 Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar's.

25

o de eipen autoiV apodote toinun ta kaisaroV kaisari kai ta tou qeou tw qew
20:25 And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's.

kai ouk iscusan epilabesqai autou rhmatoV enantion tou laou kai qaumasanteV epi th apokrisei autou esighsan
20:26 And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.

27

proselqonteV de tineV twn saddoukaiwn oi antilegonteV anastasin mh einai ephrwthsan auton
20:27 Then came to [him] certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,

28

legonteV didaskale mwshV egrayen hmin ean tinoV adelfoV apoqanh ecwn gunaika kai outoV ateknoV apoqanh ina labh o adelfoV autou thn gunaika kai exanasthsh sperma tw adelfw autou
20:28 Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

epta oun adelfoi hsan kai o prwtoV labwn gunaika apeqanen ateknoV
20:29 There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.

30

kai elaben o deuteroV thn gunaika kai outoV apeqanen ateknoV
20:30 And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.

31

kai o tritoV elaben authn wsautwV de kai oi epta ou katelipon tekna kai apeqanon
20:31 And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died.

usteron de pantwn apeqanen kai h gunh
20:32 Last of all the woman died also.

33

en th oun anastasei tinoV autwn ginetai gunh oi gar epta escon authn gunaika
20:33 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.

34

kai apokriqeiV eipen autoiV o ihsouV oi uioi tou aiwnoV toutou gamousin kai ekgamiskontai
20:34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:

35

oi de kataxiwqenteV tou aiwnoV ekeinou tucein kai thV anastasewV thV ek nekrwn oute gamousin oute ekgamiskontai
20:35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:

36

oute gar apoqanein eti dunantai isaggeloi gar eisin kai uioi eisin tou qeou thV anastasewV uioi onteV
20:36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

37

oti de egeirontai oi nekroi kai mwshV emhnusen epi thV batou wV legei kurion ton qeon abraam kai ton qeon isaak kai ton qeon iakwb
20:37 Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

qeoV de ouk estin nekrwn alla zwntwn panteV gar autw zwsin
20:38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.

apokriqenteV de tineV twn grammatewn eipon didaskale kalwV eipaV
20:39 Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.

ouketi de etolmwn eperwtan auton ouden
20:40 And after that they durst not ask him any [question at all].

41

eipen de proV autouV pwV legousin ton criston uion dabid einai
20:41 And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David's son?

42

kai autoV dabid legei en biblw yalmwn eipen o kurioV tw kuriw mou kaqou ek dexiwn mou
20:42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

43

ewV an qw touV ecqrouV sou upopodion twn podwn sou
20:43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

dabid oun kurion auton kalei kai pwV uioV autou estin
20:44 David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?

45

akouontoV de pantoV tou laou eipen toiV maqhtaiV autou
20:45 Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples,

46

prosecete apo twn grammatewn twn qelontwn peripatein en stolaiV kai filountwn aspasmouV en taiV agoraiV kai prwtokaqedriaV en taiV sunagwgaiV kai prwtoklisiaV en toiV deipnoiV
20:46 Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;

47

oi katesqiousin taV oikiaV twn chrwn kai profasei makra proseucontai outoi lhyontai perissoteron krima
20:47 Which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.
